Alton Douglas is probably best known as the author of several best-selling books and for the three years he was quizmaster and co-writer of the top-rated BBC Midlands TV series "KNOW YOUR PLACE."   However, he has also been a TV and radio character actor, professional comedian, showbiz/jazz book and record reviewer, TV & radio commercial voice-over artist, 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards trombonist and the voice behind several cartoons and children's toys etc. Alton was also the archives and stills consultant for the centenary video, "Made in Birmingham."

This web site aims to introduce you to the wide of range of books which he now produces, including some for children and to share his many memories of working in the entertainment world and growing up and living in Birmingham, a place so special to many people.

Alton's wife Jo plays a very important part in all the activities of the business and together they have designed this site to be as user-friendly as possible. There are five permanent sections and from time to time there will be a "Special Feature" section.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
Out of print for several years - this book is once again available. One of our earlier publications, it contains over 200 photographs and countless "vintage" advertisements.  Relive the moment when the people of Stourbridge celebrated the Coronation of King George V. Then have a chuckle as comedian Charlie Drake makes a guest appearance at the SCM Typewriters factory in West Bromwich.  See Walsall Station in 1969 as the floodwaters turn it into a "canal" - and remember too the floods of 1931 in Smethwick as the residents of Rosefield Road clear up after the deluge.

Why not play “catch-up” and take the opportunity to buy that book you’ve been meaning to get for some time!  Sadly, as “The Black Country Remembered” demonstrates, we can’t guarantee that every book will be available for all time.

When I was a lad there was a gadget, a bit like a periscope, that enabled you to look over the heads in a crowd.  Try and imagine that you're using one to see behind you and you'll notice that the 70's are fading further and further into the distance.  Some people refer to the period as "only yesterday" but in reality the decade finished over a quarter of a century ago.  So, what have we got for you this time?  Scores of streets to stroll along, lots of window-shopping to do and crowds full of faces to look through (and hopefully identify some of them).  In total, over 350 Items - if you've got the time and energy, just count them.  Incidentally, the Queen seemed almost to be addicted to our city, she visited us so often and -  as you'll see - how we turned out to greet her on every occasion!
